Tatted Violet Bookmark

This bookmark will be a Christmas gift for my son’s girlfriend. He said she likes purple, so I decided little violets would be fun. I made the outer green design to resemble leaves.

The nice thing about this design is that you can make it as long as you want it to be. Just vary the number of violets!

This design is beginner level and uses one shuttle. I used size 20 Lizbeth thread color 138 Leafy Green and color 641 Lilac Dark.

Instructions:

Violets
The visual pattern shows a little thread between each ring, but this works best if you stitch each ring tightly against the previous one.

R: (3ds p) 5 times, 3ds, close
R: 3ds j to last p of previous R, (3ds p) 4 times, 3ds, close
Repeat between * until there are a total of four rings
R: 3ds j to last p of previous R, (3ds p) 3 times, 3ds, j to first p of first R, 3ds, close
Cut and tie.

R: (3ds p) 5 times, 3ds, close
R: 3ds j to last p of previous R, (3ds p) 2 times, 3ds j to center p of any ring on the previous violet, 3ds p 3ds, close
R: 3ds j to last p of previous R, 3ds j to same picot of previous violet, (3ds p) 3 times, 3ds, close
R: (3ds p) 5 times, 3ds close
R: 3ds j to last p of previous R, (3ds p) 3 times, 3ds, j to first p of first R, 3ds, close
Cut and tie.

Repeat this last violet for as many times as you want. I made a total of five violets in my sample, and the tatted portion of the bookmark ended up being about 4.5 inches (11.5 cm) long.

Cut and tie

To make a tassel, cut a piece of paperboard (a cereal box would work great) about 2×5″ (5×12 cm). Wrap your thread around the board lengthwise until you are happy with the amount of thread for the tassel. Cut the threads at one end of the board and fold them in half. Pass the fold through the space with the long chain, pass the ends of the thread through the loop, and pull snug. Trim to desired length.
