Tatted Sunshine Motif

Tatted Sunshine Motif

We’ve had a very unusual spring this year. We live in a semi-desert area, but this year we had rain almost every single day this month. It’s nice to know the reservoirs are full, but that many days without sun turned out to be hard for me.

So I found myself tatting something in a cheery yellow that turned out to look to me like the sun.

I found that the last row was a little tight for fitting around the center of the motif. I did have to stretch it a bit in order for it to lay perfectly flat. To avoid that, you can either make the long picots in the center section into just regular picots, or you can make the joining picots in the last round longer.

This pattern uses two shuttles (I apologize to the needle tatters out there. I don’t know how this translates.) Many times you can use the shoelace trick and avoid the second shuttle, but in this motif, I think it works a lot better with the two shuttles. When you use two shuttles, it creates a small space between the adjacent rings that works beautifully for joining at the base of the rings.

This is an experienced beginner pattern.

I used Lizbeth Pineapple Parfait Color 170 Size 40. The motif is approximately 2-3/4 inches in diameter (7 cm in diameter) when stitched with size 40 thread.
