This little bag was fun to tat up. It’s designed to hold the rice that people throw toward the bride and groom at weddings. It was quick, but I don’t know if I’d want to do 200 of them! Maybe for a small wedding…
It can also be adapted for larger bags such as coin purses, amulet bags, or even a small purse. I’ve added a way for doing this at the end of the pattern.
This design is beginner level and uses one shuttle. I used size 20 Lizbeth Summer Fun thread (color 104).

You will need:
Thread in your choice of color and size.
1 tatting shuttle
1/8″ wide satin ribbon
4″ square of bridal tulle
1 small safety pin

Instructions:
Round 1
R: (3ds p) 5 times, 3ds, close, turn
*Ch: (3ds p) 5 times, 3ds, turn
R: 3ds p 3ds j to 4th p of previous R, (3ds p) 3 times, 3ds, close, turn*
Repeat between * until you have completed a total of 5 rings.
Ch: (3ds p) 5 times, 3ds, turn
R: 3ds p 3ds j to 4th p of previous R, 3ds p 3ds j to 2nd p of first R in round, 3ds p 3ds, close, turn
Ch: (3ds p) 5 times, 3ds
Cut and tie.
Round 2
*R: (3ds p) 2 times, 3ds j to 4th p of any Ch in Round 1, (3ds p) 2 times, 3ds, close, turn
Ch: (3ds p) 5 times, 3ds, turn*
Repeat between * around, joining to the 2nd and 4th picots of the chains in Round 1.
Cut and tie.
Round 3
Leave a length of 3/8″ of thread between all the rings on this round.
*R: 4ds j to 4th p of any Ch on previous R, 4ds, close, turn
R: 2ds p (1ds p) 4 times, 2ds, close, turn*
Repeat between * around, joining to the 2nd and 4th picots of the chains in Round 2.
Cut and tie.
To make the bag:
Lay the tulle against the wrong side of your tatting. Either using hand stitching or the machine, sew the tatting to the tulle across all the 3/8″ threads on the last round. Attach the safety pin to one end of the ribbon. Weave the ribbon in and out of the 3/8″ threads all the way around. Put about 1 Tbsp of rice on the center of the tulle, pull the ribbon tight, and tie a bow.
For a larger bag that may be more useful as an amulet bag or coin purse, add another Round 3, then stitch the following as many times as you wish to make the bag taller. I haven’t tried this in real life, but I believe it should work fine.
R: (3ds p) 2 times j to middle p of any Ch in last round, (3ds p) 2 times, 3ds, close, turn
Ch: (3ds p) 5 times, 3ds, turn
Repeat around, joining to the middle p of each Ch.
Once you have the bag tall enough, stitch the last round. You may want to use a different, more durable fabric for the inside of the bag.
