I think I’m in a rut. I love clover leafs! I don’t think I’ve designed a single edging that doesn’t have one.
I have never gone around a clover leaf in the same manner as making a rose before, and it just sounded fun. I really like how it turned out!
This pattern is beginner to intermediate level and uses one shuttle. I used size 30 DMC Cebelia thread in white.

A few notes about this pattern before you begin:
You will notice that the pattern says 2ds for the beginning stitches of the chain immediately after you have finished with the clover. That isn’t a typo. I tried it with 3ds to match the corresponding chain, but it pulled. If it works better for you to use 3ds, by all means do it. I just found it laid flatter with 2ds.
At the end of the first chain that goes around the top of the clover leaf, turn the work, but keep the clover leaf facing downward. This puts you in position to work around it again. You will do the same turn at the end of this chain, too.
At the end of the first chain that goes around the top of the clover, and after turning the work, the two threads are twisted around each other a little instead of being in the best position to continue stitching. I just ignored that and went on with my tatting. If that bothers you, you can use two shuttles for this pattern and just swap shuttles at this point. It’s entirely up to you.
Large R: (3ds p) 5 times, 3ds, close, turn
Lower Ch: (6ds p) 2 times, 3ds, turn
* Layered clover leaf:
R: 9ds p 3ds, close
R: 3ds j to last p of prev R, 6ds p 3ds, close
R: 3ds j to last p of prev R, 9ds, close, turn
Ch: 11ds lj to previous join, 8ds lj to next join, 11ds lj to base of clover leaf, turn keeping clover facing down.
Ch: 3ds p 3ds j to 4th p of Large R, (3ds p) 2 times, 3ds lj in same space as lj in previous Ch, (3ds p) 3 times, 3ds lj in next space as lj in previous Ch, (3ds p) 4 times, 3ds, lj to base of clover, turn keeping clover facing down.
Lower Ch: 2ds j to last p of previous Lower Ch, 6ds p 6ds, turn
Large R: 3ds p 3ds j to third picot in last Ch of clover, (3ds p) 3 times, 3ds, close, turn
Lower Ch: (6ds p) 2 times, 3ds, turn *
Repeat between * until the edging is the length you wish it to be. Cut and tie.
