Here’s the second installment of Bruce’s doily. It’s interesting to me to see how he puts tatting together.
This doily is meant to be any size you wish. Just put together as many of the center motifs as you want as long as they form a rectangle or a square once you’re done. I added two more motifs to mine since we published the first round so I can show you how the pattern goes together better.
As I stitched this, it no longer laid flat. Bruce’s idea was for the chains to be long enough that there is space underneath them. This made it wave along the edges. I pressed this sample lightly to hold it flat. He promises the next round will be a bit “airier” and will help pull this row into shape.
I used Lizbeth Autumn Spice, Color 136 in size 20.

You will need:
Thread in your choice of color and size.
1 tatting shuttle or tatting needles

Instructions:
Do not wind your shuttle just yet. As you’re holding the previous round, look at the top right motif. Find the 7th picot of the top left Ch in this motif. Pull the thread through from the back to the front through this picot. Now wind the shuttle, and do not cut the thread once you’re done.
Since this doily is meant to be any size, depending on the number of repeats done in the first “round”, these instructions are written a little differently.
Round 1:
Begin a corner once you’ve made the first join to a corner motif in the previous round.
Ch: 8ds lj to 1st p of next Ch
Ch: 8ds lj to 4th p of same Ch
Ch: 8ds lj to 6th p of same Ch
Ch: 8ds lj to last p of same Ch
Ch: 8ds lj to 3rd p of next Ch
Begin the side once you’ve completed the stitches around a corner
Ch: 14ds lj to 7th p of next Ch
Ch: 14ds lj to 3rd p of next Ch
Repeat across the side until you have completed the first lj in the corner motif of the previous round.
If your side has only two motifs (essentially two corner motifs), you will stitch only one Ch of 14ds
Continue around until you join to the same spot where you began. Do not cut the thread.
Round 2:
To stitch a corner
Ch: 8ds lj to the next space between chains on previous round
Ch: 9ds lj to the next space between chains
Ch: 10ds lj to the next space between chains
Ch: 9ds lj to the next space between chains
Ch: 8ds lj to the next space between chains
To stitch along a side
Ch: 16ds lj to the next space between chains
Repeat until you reach the next chain of 8ds at the corner.
Continue around until you join to the same spot where you began. Do not cut the thread.
Round 3:
To stitch around a corner
Ch: (2ds p) 9 times, 2ds, lj to the second space between chains on the previous round
Ch: (2ds p) 7 times, 2ds, lj to the next space between chains
Ch: (2ds p) 9 tiemes, 2ds, lj to the second space between chains
To stitch along a side
Ch: (2ds p) 9 times, 2ds, lj to the next space between chains
Repeat until you reach the next chain of 8ds at the corner.
Continue around until you join to the same spot where you began. Cut and tie.
