Tatted Ice Cream Cone

It’s been a hot summer in Colorado. Earlier this month, I was hot and was trying to talk myself out of cooling down with some ice cream. Then it hit me–why not tat an ice cream cone instead? So I did, and saved myself a bunch of calories in the process!

This is an intermediate-level 2-shuttle pattern using simple rings and chains. It was tatted using Flora size 20 thread.

Instructions:

You will need:

Flora thread in your choice of color for the cone, size 20
Flora thread in white for the ice cream, size 20
10 2-3mm tiger eye beads
2 tatting shuttles Sewing needle and matching thread

Cone

Round 1
Use thread in your choice of color

R: 8ds p 6ds p 2ds, close
R: 2ds j to last p (3ds p) 8 times, 2ds, close
R: 2ds j to last p 6ds p 8ds, close, turn
Ch: 10ds lj to p on last R
Ch: (3ds p) 3 times, 3ds, lj to 3rd p of large R
Ch: (3ds p) 3 times, 3ds, lj to center p of large R, do not turn
At this point, either do the shoelace trick or change to the second shuttle.
R: 3ds j to last p of previous Ch (3ds p) 6 times, 3ds, close, do not turn
At this point, either do the shoelace trick or change to the second shuttle.
Ch: 3ds j to last p of previous R (3ds p) twice, 3ds lj to 7th p of large R
Ch: (3ds p) 3 times, 3ds lj to center p of next R
Ch: 10ds, cut and tie to base of clover leaf.

Round 2
Tie thread to first available p at the top of the cone
Ch: 3ds p (2ds p) 3 times, 3ds, skip next p lj to next p
Ch: 3ds p (2ds p) 3 times, 3ds, turn
R: 4ds j to center p of next ch on previous round 4ds, close, turn
Ch: 3ds p (2ds p) 3 times, 3ds, turn
R: 8ds j to 3rd p of R on previous round 8ds, close, turn

R: 6ds p 6ds, close, turn

Thread 2 beads onto shuttle thread

J to bottom of prevous R
*Slide down one bead
R: 3ds p 2ds p 2ds bj to lp of previous R (2ds p) 5 times, 2ds lp 2ds p 2ds p 3ds, close, turn
Repeat previous R
J to bottom of previous R*
Repeat between * one more time

Round 2
Ch: 9ds bj to lp of previous R, 3ds p (2ds p) 4 times, 3ds, skip one p and lj to next p
Ch: 3ds p (2ds p) 7 times, 3ds, lj to first p after bj on next R of previous round
Ch: 3ds p (2ds p) 5 times, 3ds, skip 3 p, j to next p (should be last p before bj on same R)
Ch: 3ds p (2ds p) 7 times, 3ds, skip 3 p after bj, j in next p
Ch: 3ds p (2ds p) 4 times, 3ds, bj to next available lp
Ch: 3ds, bj to next available lp

Cut and tie next to first bj on this round.

Steam in shape and sew using needle and thread to the cone.
